Acton Institute 2005-09-08: Defeat of EU Software Patents a Victory for Pirates

-> [ News | Acton Institute ]

The Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, an American think tank with affinity to the Catholic Church, is deeply disturbed by the defeat of the software patent directive in Europe. In a lead article which quotes words of the late pope John Paul II, it claims that private ownership of ideas is a needed moral right and that any denial of such ownership claims, as seen in the refusal to accept software patents, represents a victory of "pirates" who "sow the seeds of destruction". The Institute commends the European Commission for its latest legislative moves, which show that it is unimpressed by the pirates and steadfastly promoting the cause of "intellectual property".
